Smart Move or Mean Streak?
I’m holding a fun summer project hostage until my kids clean up their playroom. They really want to go do these touchable bubbles, so they are putting away the dizzying mosaic of Legos, action figures, Pokemon, books, and papers all over the floor.
Although my two boys are biggest offenders of accumulative mess, their little sister is in there now helping them. Whatever “the brothers” do, she wants to do, too. I just overheard this exchange from the kitchen and I’m not sure how to react to it.
Big Brother 1 (calling out in a sing-song voice): Who wants this Hulk Smash glove? If you want it, you can have it!
Little Sister: Me! I do! I do!!
Big Brother 1: Okay, here you go. Now put it away over there.
Little Sister: Okay!
Big Brother 2: Who wants this pile of Pokemon? If you want it, come and get it!
Little Sister: Oh, me, me! I said it first! I get it!
Big Brother 2: Okay, you can have it. They all go in that drawer.
Little Sister: Okay!
You get the idea. This process repeated for about a dozen different toys with my lazy boys tricking their little sister into doing all of the clean-up by “letting” her have all the toys.
I don’t know whether to laugh (okay, I already did that), and congratulate them for being clever and getting the job done, or get mad and punish them for being lazy and making her do all the work. I mean, the little fool did it all gladly with a smile on her face. She thought it was great.
We applaud Mark Twain when he gets his friends to paint the fence for him, right? Isn’t this the same thing?
For now, I’m letting it go. Let’s be real here. The playroom got cleaned up, which was the whole point, right? I’m anxious to see if this will happen again. If so, I think I may have to take her aside and teach her some trick to use against “the brothers” to get them back.
What do you think? I’d love to see what the majority thinks in the comments. Would you let this go or would you put a stop to it?
She will catch on quickly enough, so I say let it go for now. They are happy (and quite skilled at their leadership, I might add!), and she is happy, and the room is clean! 🙂
“Skilled leadership.” I love it! Wanna rewrite my resume, Ashley? 😉 Thanks for the read!
